vaccine pregnancyEffective January 1, 2019, our Co-op Pharmacists can provide a vaccination for dTap for pregnant women as part of the Alberta Health routine immunization schedule. Therefore, there is no charge to Alberta residents. Routine maternal dTap immunization during pregnancy protects infants against whooping cough.

Pregnant women are eligible to receive dTap immunization at or after thirteen weeks of gestation, ideally between weeks 27 to 32. Speak to one of our prescribing Co-op pharmacists for further information.

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) Vaccine

HPV is a common sexually transmitted virus. It is estimated that 75% of sexually active Canadians will have at least one sexually transmitted virus in their lifetime. Some HPV types will clear up on their own but some will cause cancers such as cervical, vaginal, vulvar and anal. Currently the HPV vaccination, Gardasil 9, is part of the Alberta Health routine immunization schedule for all grade six students in Alberta. Therefore, individuals twenty years of age and older may not have been vaccinated for HPV in school.  Vaccination against HPV is recommended for both males and females who have been, are going to be or will be sexually active. It is the only vaccine that is over 90% effective in preventing the above cancers.

Speak to our Co-op Pharmacist to see if Gardasil 9 vaccine is right for you. Our pharmacists can prescribe and inject in the same visit.

Meningitis Vaccine

vaccine youg adultsAdolescents and young adults are at high risk of meningococcal meningitis. Outbreaks have occurred in North America in high schools, universities, colleges, camps and sports teams. Some of the symptoms include sudden fever, stiff neck and intense headache. Meningitis can be fatal within 24-hours of first symptoms. Risk factors include; sharing drinks, cups & utensils, living in close quarters, coughing & sneezing, and kissing.

Currently the MenC-ACYW vaccine is part of the Alberta Health routine immunization schedule for all grade nine students and provides protection against certain strains that cause meningitis.  The Meningococcal Group B vaccine is not currently part of the routine vaccination program but is recommended for students in high school and universities due to the above risk factors.

If you or a family member would like to learn more about vaccinating against meningitis, speak to one of our Co-op pharmacists today.

Pneumonia Vaccines

Pneumonia (lung infection) is caused by bacteria that can be spread from person to person by talking, coughing and sneezing. It can lead to more serious complications such as bacteria in the blood stream or meningitis. Certain risk factors increase your risk of getting pneumonia such as being 50 years of age or over, medical conditions such as heart disease, COPD, asthma, diabetes, liver disease and cancer or smoking.  There are currently two vaccines available to help prevent pneumonia; Prevnar 13 and Pneumovax-23.
