New Provincial Funding for Prevnar20 and Tdap Vaccines in Alberta

As of July 1st, both the Prevnar20 and Tdap vaccines are now provincially funded in Alberta, providing increased access to essential immunizations for eligible residents.

Prevnar20 Vaccine:

Prevnar20, a one-time pneumonia vaccine, is now available for free to eligible Albertans. This vaccine doesn’t require any boosters and can be accessed directly at pharmacies without a prescription. The eligibility criteria include:

• Albertans over 18 with certain chronic health conditions (as outlined by health authorities).
• Albertans over 65 who have not previously received a government-funded pneumonia vaccine after the age of 65 and do not have chronic health conditions.

For those eligible, receiving the Prevnar20 vaccine will be recorded in their Alberta Health files.

Tdap Vaccine:

The Tdap vaccine, which protects against Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Whooping Cough), is now also available for all Albertans over 18 who require a booster shot. It is recommended to get this vaccine every 10 years. Like Prevnar20, it can be obtained at pharmacies without a prescription, and the administration will be reflected in Alberta Health records.
