As we move through August, we’re celebrating the incredible variety of Canadian cheese—some longtime favourites, some fresh finds, and one exceptional pick from our cheesemonger.
Let’s start with a classic: Boursin. Known for its creamy texture and punchy herb flavours, Boursin is a go-to for snacking, entertaining, or elevating your favourite pasta dish. Add it to a cheese board, pair it with crisp crackers on the patio, or stir it into mashed potatoes for a silky finish. But here’s something you may not know—Boursin sold in Canada is made in Canada! A familiar favourite with a local connection? We’ll take it.
Next up: Founders & Farmers. This lineup of everyday cheeses—brie, camembert, feta, and parmesan—delivers incredible flavour and versatility at a great price. Whether you’re building a salad, topping your favourite dish, or reaching into the fridge for a quick snack, these cheeses are a smart and tasty choice. Great cheese doesn’t need to be fancy to be fabulous.
Our journey then takes us west to Vancouver Island, home of Natural Pastures in the Comox Valley. Since 2001, this award-winning cheesemaker has been producing high-quality cheeses using milk from local farms. Originally known for their water buffalo cheeses, they’ve expanded to create an impressive range of cow’s milk cheeses—from brie-style and cheddar to unique specialty varieties. Every bite reflects the richness of the region, both in flavour and tradition.
This month’s spotlight cheese is Le Pizy from Fromagerie La Suisse-Normande in Québec. This ultra-soft, brie-style cheese is beloved for its thick, gooey interior and rich, creamy flavour. A hint of salt balances the decadence, making it an ideal pairing with a chilled rosé—or fruit juice if you’re keeping things alcohol-free. It’s a showstopper on any cheese board and a treat for all cheese lovers.
Stop by your local Calgary Co-op to discover these Canadian cheeses and more. Whether you’re entertaining, experimenting in the kitchen, or just treating yourself to a moment of indulgence, there’s a Canadian cheese waiting to be enjoyed.
