Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that occurs in certain individuals that are exposed to allergic triggers resulting in symptoms. The body over reacts to allergy triggers resulting in symptoms such as swelling of the lips or tongue, difficulty swallowing, swelling around the eyes, hives, difficulty breathing and other life threatening reactions.

Severe allergy triggers

Common triggers that can lead to anaphylaxis:

  • Food including peanuts, eggs, milk, tree nuts, wheat, soy, sesame seed, seafood, mustard and sulphites
  • Insect stings including bees, wasps, yellow jacket, hornet and ants
  • Certain medications
  • Latex
  • Other unknown substances
