Chinese food has a long and fascinating history in North America. Widely believed to be the first Chinese restaurant on the continent, Canton restaurant opened its doors in San Francisco way back in 1849!
Chinese cuisine has come a long way since then, when a lack of traditional and uniquely Chinese ingredients in Canada and the United States meant restaurateurs had to adapt and change the recipes from their homeland.
The Calgary-based family behind Wok n Grill have been in the culinary industry for over 25 years, and have been partnered with Calgary Co-op since 2008, making tasty Chinese food for customers to pick up hot and ready, or to take away and eat at home or the office.
“We opened our original hot food store at the Shawnessy location in 2008, but today our hot food counter location is at Quarry Park,” recalls Jessica Yen, whose father Ricky runs Wok n Grill. “We wanted the opportunity to share our food with a larger population.”
Wok n Grill makes Chinese takeout favourites in varying sizes like Wok n Grill Chicken Fried Rice, Vegetable Chow Mein, Sesame Chicken, Ginger Beef, Sweet & Sour Pork, Pork Dumplings, Spring Rolls, Lemon Chicken, Honey Garlic Pork, and all can be found in the deli department at Calgary Co-op, ready to grab and go. The food is made with high quality ingredients and no MSG.
“We pride ourselves on using the best available ingredients to provide the best quality food possible. Our recipes have been perfected through years of Ricky’s experience,” Yen says.
The Yens have enjoyed being partnered with Co-op for over a decade.
“Co-op provided us with a larger demographic, with stores spanning all across the city and in surrounding areas, and as a result, we are able to share the items we love with Calgarians across the city, rather than limiting our output to one store. Co-op has a strong commitment to quality when it comes to groceries, and we also have a strong commitment to quality when it comes to creating fresh, tasty and high quality meals for our customers.”
