It’s no secret that dietary supplements are a great way to give your overall health a boost. From protein powders to help you bulk up or round out your diet, to superfood supplements to fight fatigue, there are so many ways to add some extra zing to your everyday diet—and your overall health.
Should I take Protein Powders?
There are many types of protein powders available on the market, including whey, casein, soy, pea and hemp, however whey protein is by far the most popular and the most researched.
“Protein is essential and many people are deficient in it, in which case we will advise them to supplement,” explains Tina Szenasi, Natural Choice Advisor at Calgary Co-op. “It is important for maintaining muscle mass, repairing after workouts and for immune system function.”
Whey protein comes from the liquid that is produced when milk turns into cheese and is super easy for our body to absorb as well as having innumerable health benefits. It has been known to promote muscle growth, reduce inflammation and lower blood pressure. For athletes or anyone looking to lose weight, it is a high-quality source of protein that helps you stay fuller for longer and keeps your muscles healthy and lean.
Some are looking to add more protein to their diets or to replace a meal, usually breakfast.
“The type of protein the customer chooses is normally a preference or dietary concern. Vegans and lactose intolerant customers would choose a plant protein over whey, which is from milk,” Szenasi says. “For a true meal replacement, we have both whey and plant-based options. Our whey-based powders include brands like Kaizen, Prairie Naturals and PVL.”
What are the benefits of Green Powders?
Greens powders may include vegetables or sea or water vegetation like algae.
Algae powders such as chlorella and spirulina are known for their bright green hue and awesome benefits to our overall health. Available as a powder or a supplement, these nutrient-dense superfoods are teeming with vitamins A, B, C and E as well as minerals such as magnesium, calcium, selenium and zinc.
In fact, spirulina is said to contain small amounts of almost every single mineral your body requires and, gram for gram, is among the most nutritious foods on the planet. Algae powders are also an excellent source of iron and protein, making them an invaluable source of energy for vegans and vegetarians.
A ‘super green’ powder can be a great way to get a lot of nutrients and vitamins all at once. Often made withvegetables, sprouts and organic cereal grass juices that have been dried, these powders ensure your body receives the nutritional benefits of multiple servings of fruit and vegetables every day.
Szenasi recommends brands such as Garden of Life, Organika, Genuine Health, Botanica and Progressive.
What about ‘superfood’ supplements?
If you want to introduce more antioxidants into your diet, look no further than a superfood supplement. Açai, a superfruit from the rainforests of Central and South America, has three times as many antioxidants as blueberries and helps protect our cells as well as reducing bad cholesterol in the body.
Camu Camu is another really good antioxidant. It’s a sour berry originating from the Peruvian rainforest. It is the extremely high in vitamin C and contains far more than even a fresh medium orange. Camu Camu has health benefits including strengthening the immune system, fighting fatigue, plus it boasts anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties and can also boost vision health.
What do collagen powders do?
Making up one third of the protein in the human body, collagen plays a huge part in maintaining the structure of your skin, bones and muscles, among other body parts.
As we age, the amount of collagen in our body decreases, which is why our skin begins to wrinkle and our joints become weaker. Taking collagen supplements may have benefits such as helping skin retain moisture and elasticity, keeping your bones and teeth healthy and easing joint pain.
How to Choose a Good Powder
With the powder and supplements industry booming, it’s important to know what to look for when choosing one. Make sure to always check the label and follow these simple rules: the fewer ingredients, the better; look for powders that use whole foods and natural ingredients and finally, look out for sugars and artificial sweeteners - there should be none or a very small amount as this can counteract the benefits of the supplement!
Put your health first now by adding a powder or a supplement to your diet and start feeling the amazing benefits!
