We’re all familiar with the typical brands when it comes to sunscreen, but did you know there’s many natural choice options for sun protection?
Why should you choose natural sunscreens?
In short, natural sunscreens generally do not contain harsh chemicals which potentially can be harmful to our health long term.
“Natural sunscreens are mineral based and most use zinc oxide for the ultraviolet or UV light protection. The way zinc oxide works is that it creates a natural barrier on the skin reflecting the sun’s rays,” explains Kelly Zakus, Natural Choice Advisor, Calgary Co-op. “Natural sunscreens are also a great choice for people who tend to find that other creams and lotions can irritate their skin.”
Natural Sunscreens are Often Made with the Environment in Mind
“Many of the chemicals used in sunscreen can harm our coral reefs and can be dangerous to animals. Natural sunscreens are often labeled as reef safe so you can ensure you are protecting yourself—and our environment,” says Zakus.
Sun Protection and Skin Protection
Natural sunscreens are formulated to be good for the skin while that reliable providing sun protection. Some of the non-medicinal ingredients include aloe, cocoa butter, shea butter and jojoba oil and these not only help with easier application of the products and to minimize the white film from the zinc oxide but they’re also nourishing to the skin.
“Additional ingredients like raspberry extract, green tea and vitamin E are also usually part of the ingredient list, and these can help in providing a source of antioxidants to help protect the skin from sun damage.”
There are many natural sunscreens available, and at Calgary Co-op you can find several featured brands including Goddess Garden, The Green Beaver Company, Alba Botanica, and Derma-E.
Adds Zakus, “Within each line there are products specifically formulated for kids or adults as well as products to protect your face, or specific to more active uses that have a little more water and sweat resistance. As with conventional sunscreens there are various SPF levels to choose from to get the coverage you need.”
As with all sunscreens, it’s important to read and follow the directions for application of the products and to re-apply regularly, particularly after swimming or exercise.
Find Goddess Garden, The Green Beaver Company, Alba Botanica, and Derma-E natural sunscreens at your neighbourhood Calgary Co-op store in the Natural Choice section.
