Lone Pine Chickens

Lone Pine Colony, located a couple hours outside of Calgary, is the farm form which Co-op gets its fantastic locally produced Hutterite chickens.

chicken blogAccording to their website, this local farm has over 500 years of Hutterite family farming history; a significant reason they see themselves as stewards of the land.

“When you own land from one generation to the next you always look after what you have,” explained Peter Entz of Lone Pine. “We feed the birds all our own grain that we grow so that we can have more control over the finished product.”

Lone Pine has also become leaders in animal welfare by meeting the standards of Humane Farm Animal Care which gives them the Certified Humane label.

“Certified Humane is an organization that comes and audits once a year to make sure you follow their standards,” Explained Entz. “Birds need more square foot per bird, more drinkers and things that encourage natural behaviors. Recreation toys like hay or straw bales for the birds to perch on seem to grow happier, healthier birds for a more natural taste.”

The experience and personal touch that comes from a smaller farm like Lone Pine also has benefits for the consumer as well. These birds are raised slower which allows them time to grow larger. The benefit of a larger and slightly older bird is that it is given the time to develop some fat which helps to keep it moist and tender while cooking. This extra effort is something that is much harder to achieve on a larger scale.

“This is perfect fit for us; with these chickens being produced so close,” said Trevor Moore. “Working with a local business – one that has been doing it for so long - gives us a better product that we’re happy to have on our shelves.”

The Lone Pine Hutterite chickens are available in stores for limited time only so subscribe to our e-newsletter, watch our social media channels for updates - and keep an eye out for them in-store.
