Festive Treats from the Bakery

December 19, 2019

For anyone who’s ever spent an afternoon baking with their parents or grandparents, you know those times create special memories. Particularly around the holiday season it’s nice to relive those days, but when a weekend of baking—you covered in flour up to your elbows with the kids spilling gritty sugar on the floor—is not in the cards, we can help get you the decadent baked goods you need with none of the mess, fuss, or time.

Let the staff at Calgary Co-op’s Bakery department help you plan and execute your home baked holidays!

sweet selectionsSweet Selections Trays
Made in-store by our bakery teams, Co-op’s Sweet Selections trays are available with a number of different treats: Festive Cookies, Festive Cookies & Nanaimo Bars, Cake Slices, Kids Festive Treats, Assorted Dessert Slices, and Assorted Desserts.

These handy timesavers that are perfect for the office potluck or your family Christmas eve dinner have about 18-24 pieces depending on variety. You can find these in store (find them in the Bakery Cold case or look for the Cookie Platters and Kids Trays on a festive table) or by making a special order so your choice is guaranteed and ready.

ginger break loafGingerbread Loaf Cake
This is the bakery item Co-op members wait for each year with eager anticipation! When you need something that tastes like Christmas, you need to pick up Co-op’s 450g Gingerbread Loaf Cake. This moist and flavourful cake is baked fresh daily by our teams through the festive season, but only for that limited time.

Try serving a slice with vanilla bean ice cream or gelato, or glazing it with a cream cheese icing. It’s also a decadent holiday breakfast warmed up and spread with delicious butter.

Butter Shortbread Cookies
When mom’s shortbreads aren’t in the cards, pick up some of Calgary Co-op’s fresh baked in-store Shortbread Rounds or Shortbread Fingers.

These cookies are all butter, and made with ingredients you can pronounce, just like the ones you used to make as a kid!

Find some options dipped or drizzled with Belgian chocolate, or look for our Cranberry Shortbreads or the colourful, must-have Icebox Shortbreads made with tiny bits of sugared fruit. These cookies are sold by the dozen, or mix & match your own in the bulk section.

Everyone knows you’ve got to leave some baking for Santa and his reindeer! With Co-op’s Bake at Home fresh cookie dough, you can create a new tradition with your children by baking up a fresh batch of cookies on Christmas Eve before the kids go to bed. (Or just bake one cookie or two in the toaster oven for your own afternoon or midnight snack!)

These convenient packages of 6 are found in the Bakery Freezer section, and come complete with easy baking directions.

  • Shortbread Rounds or Fingers (All Butter)
  • Cranberry Shortbread (All Butter)
  • Icebox (All Butter)
  • Gingerbread Squares (Margarine)

There’s also Co-op’s Jumbo Cookie Dough Varieties, in favourite flavours too, available year round):

  • Almond
  • Chocolate Candy
  • Chocolate Chunk
  • Chocolate Fudge
  • Ginger
  • Cinnamon Walnut Raisin
  • Oatmeal Raisin
  • Oatmeal Cranberry
  • Peanut Butter

almond pasteAlmond Paste to Speed-Up Baking Projects
Another Co-op Bakery timesaver for home bakers is our Almond Paste. Sold in a 250g package, Almond Paste is a blend of marzipan and powdered sugar in equal parts. It can be used in baking and as a topping or filling on fruit cakes or as a decoration for regular cakes.

Almond Paste is similar to Marzipan, but a bit different. Marzipan is made slightly differently depending on who’s making it, but this version generally has corn syrup instead of icing sugar, to make it more pliable for shaping into figures and candies. It has fewer almonds in it, and so the flavour isn’t has pronounced as Almond Paste.

panettone3Calgary Italian Bakery Panettone
At Co-op, traditional holiday panettone can be found from our partners at Calgary Italian Bakery. Locally handcrafted and lovingly baked, these panettone are then boxed up in beautiful red and gold boxes, making these local delights perfect for giving as a hostess gift, or to friends and neighbours who may drop by with a gift for you.

Try the White Chocolate & Cranberry Panettone (plump, juicy cranberries contrast perfectly with creamy white chocolate in this light and chewy holiday bread), or Traditional Panettone. If there's any left over, it makes divine French toast.

Gingerbread Houses & Royal Icing
Another holiday tradition that’s so much fun to continue is the assembly of a Gingerbread House. There’s two lovely varieties this year: a simple house, or a mini village with five small houses in it to build and decorate, meaning you can divide up a house for each of the kids to assemble and prevent fights. (He stole my gum drops! She broke my roof!)

ugly sweater cookies2Not ready to commit to an architectural endeavour? Co-op’s Bakery also has Ugly Sweater Cookie Decorating Kits again this year.

If you’re baking your own cookies by want to save some time on the icing, pick up a package of Royal Icing in a 500g tub. This icing is used for decorating gingerbread men and sugar cookies and holds its shape after spreading or decorating so it doesn’t get messy and runny like traditional cake icing.

6” Butter Blend Crust or 8” Vegan Pies
The smell of a fresh baked pie is a guaranteed way to make guests—or the family—feel welcome at home. Co-op Bakery has new pies that we bake in-store daily, but these flaky, fruity delights can also be purchased frozen and unbaked so you can do it yourself at home.

6” Butter Blend Varieties Available:

  • Salted Caramel Apple
  • Raspberry Rhubarb
  • Blackberry Apple

8” Vegan Pie Varieties Available:

  • Apple
  • Blueberry Rhubarb

The bottom line: no matter what style of baker you are: a dedicated make-it-from-scratch’er, someone who’d love a little help, or the kind of person that needs full baking support, Co-op’s Bakery department has you covered for the holidays!
