Ah, Lunchables. Kids love them in their lunches and they just happen to be super convenient and inexpensive, costing just a couple of dollars when they’re on sale. Kits featuring crackers, cheese, ham, turkey, or bologna all in one convenient package have been a staple of kids’ lunches for years. But have you ever thought of making your own Lunchables, perhaps with more nutritious components that meet your (and/or your child's) dietary needs? It’s actually very possible to create your own buildable lunch creation. 

A container is probably your best bet for the packaging, as it’s washable and reusable. Below are some ideas to get you started with DIY Lunchables. 

Create a Lunchable Lunch Kit: Bases/Carbs 
Ritz crackers are a popular and tried and true base for Lunchables. They’re sturdy and stackable, not to mention delicious, crispy and they now come in various flavours. However, you could really substitute any type of cracker, pita chips, bagel chips, veggie chips or even a small piece of bread or a bun. Not to mention you can go gluten-free too.

Create a Lunchable Lunch Kit: Meat - Shop Deli Meat
Ham and turkey are the most common protein options for lunch kits or Lunchables, but pepperoni, bologna, and salami are great alternatives. Pick up some sliced meat at the deli counter, then fold or roll slices tightly and stand them up in the container. Eat them alone or stack them on your base— it’s up to you. Another time saving option? Get some pre-made hard boiled eggs from the deli and go with that instead.

Create a Lunchable Lunch Kit: Cheese Shop Cheese
Forget plain old cheddar! If you make your own lunchable kits, you can put whatever kind of cheese you or your family prefers inside. Think Gouda, Provolone, or even mini Baybel cheeses. Whether it’s sliced cheese, cubed or shredded, you can easily fit it in somewhere. 

Create a Lunchable Lunch Kit: Fruits and Veggies Shop Fruits & Veggies
Possibly the best part of making your own Lunchables is the ability to add some fresh fruits and veggies. Carrot or celery sticks are nutritious and tasty and can fit perfectly in a packable kit. Sliced cucumbers or peppers would do nicely too, and olives are a salty palate-pleaser. If you want a sweeter treat, grapes, blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries can be easily placed in the container or scattered around if need be. 

Create a Lunchable Lunch Kit: Dessert Shop Desserts!
Many people opt to make their own Lunchables so that they’re healthier than the prepackaged ones, but dessert can still be an option. A small container of chia seed pudding would be a healthy alternative, as would some unsweetened applesauce.

Or, pop in a few Oreos or other cookies, stack pieces of a chocolate bar, add a small handful of chocolate chips, or some Hershey Kisses. If you like to bake and have some homemade cookies or squares, all the better!

Lunch Kit Packing Hacks
As you can see, there is really no shortage of options you have when making your own Lunchables. If you don’t have a container that’s already partitioned, don’t worry. Foil muffin or cupcake liners are great for keeping everything in its place. You can also find storage-friendly, stackable separated. Whether these homemade Lunchables are for you or your kids, you have the freedom to customize them to any tastes or dietary needs, while still having an ultra-portable lunch option.
