For many of us, baking is one of life’s great kitchen joys. But thanks to busy lives and perhaps even a lack of skill, lots of folks don’t bake. There’s another factor at play too; for those who do want to whip up that homemade birthday cake, or morning muffins, many time-saving boxed mixes are loaded with fillers and other ingredients. Calgary-based Alberta Naturals is hoping to change that.
“It’s the next best thing to homemade,” says Judy Stevens, Business Development Manager at Alberta Natural Products. “Conventional baking mixes have a lot of ingredients that are difficult to pronounce. That said, we identified a gap in the marketplace for something that was just a very simple, clean baking mix with simple ingredients that you can pronounce, and that you would find in your own pantry.”
Alberta Naturals baking mixes come in a variety of options including Alberta Naturals Decadent Dark Chocolate Cake Mix, Create-A-Cookie Mix, Create-A-Muffin Mix, Fudgy Chocolate Brownie Mix, Scrumptious Banana Bread Mix, Southern Red Velvet Cake Mix and Classic Golden Vanilla Cake Mix. All of them are available at Calgary Co-op stores in the baking aisle.
“If you look at the ingredients, there’s organic cane sugar, unbleached all-purpose white flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and some Kosher salt. That's it in the chocolate cake mix,” explains Stevens, “Then, you add your wet ingredients like your eggs, butter, etcetera. None of our mixes have more than a handful of ingredients.”
While the ingredients are all indeed things one might find in the pantry easily enough, Stevens points out that the convenience factor is also a big draw for Alberta Naturals customers.
“There’s no measuring needed for those dry ingredients. It’s convenient because you can just pour our mixes into the bowl, add the wet ingredients, and bake it up. In 25 or 30 minutes, you've got a fresh-baked cake, or muffin or cookies. It can be that fast.”
One of the key reasons Alberta Naturals decided to create their baking mixes is for consumers who are increasingly asking questions about what’s in their foods, and many health-conscious customers are also generally trying to avoid packaged or processed foods for health reasons. Even so, says Stevens, those healthy home bakers still want to save time.
“We heard those consumer concerns about processed foods, about artificial ingredients, such as stabilizers and preservatives, and none of our products have any of those. All seven of Alberta Naturals mixes are non-GMO, free from preservatives, no artificial colour, or sweetener. So it's just all natural. Classic, Simple, Delicious.”
