Make a note on your calendar: Co-op's yearly community initiative Fuel Good Day is back on Tuesday September 15th, 2020! On Fuel Good Day, fill your tank at Co-op and you'll be putting money in the bank for a number of local charitable organizations. That’s because Calgary Co-op will donate 5¢ per litre of gas or diesel purchased from Co-op gas stations to Calgary and area food banks.
Join Calgary Co-op for Fuel Good Day September 15th
Fuel Good Day is your chance to support your community, simply by doing something you’re already in the habit of doing; filling up your gas tank. Proceeds from the annual Fuel Good Day go directly to food banks in Calgary, Strathmore, Airdrie, Okotoks, and High River.
Many local food banks use the donations they receive to provide things like emergency food hampers—and the need in Calgary and area continues to be high.
Organizations Grateful for Support from Co-op and the Community
“With changes to CERB, continued unemployment, deferred payments due, and increasing back-to-school and cold weather expenses, the risk of food insecurity is very real,” explains the Calgary Food Bank’s CEO James McAra. “For every dollar that gets donated to us, we can distribute $5 worth of food to families and individuals who are wondering where their next meal is coming from. Even just a few cents at the pump adds up quickly. We are grateful and humbled to be chosen as a partner again this year. Co-op and their customers’ generous support helps ensure that no Calgarian goes hungry.”
Fuel Good Day Helps Your Community
First launched in 2017, Co-op's Fuel Good Day raised approximately $50,000 for several local charities in that first year. Last year, Fuel Good Day sold 1,097,883 litres of fuel and brought in $54,894.16, narrowly beating the 2018 totals: 1,081,191 litres was sold which resulted in a total donation of $54,059.55.
All the money raised is divided up among worthy Alberta organizations like the Calgary Food Bank, Airdrie Food Bank, Salvation Army Food Bank in High River, Okotoks Food Bank and the Wheatland County Food Bank in Strathmore.
“Our members really look forward to this event,” says Sage Pullen-McIntosh, Communications Director. “The cooperative spirit that inspired this fundraising campaign has really caught on and it couldn’t be more timely given all that’s going on in 2020. By filling your tank at a Calgary Co-op gas station on Fuel Good Day, you are helping support hundreds of families in need in Calgary and surrounding areas—with just this one simple purchase.”
How to take part? Fill your tank; fill a hamper.
To take part in Fuel Good Day and have your fill-up go to these worthy charities in the Calgary area, just drive in to your neighbourhood Co-op Gas Bar on Tuesday September 15th, 2020 and fill your tank. 5¢ per litre of gas or diesel purchased will be donated to one of the charities. Your visit that day could help donate anywhere from a few cents, to a few bucks, and will help fellow Albertans get healthy fresh food and much needed nutrition.
“Providing our families with fresh food is extremely important to us; along with milk, they also receive fresh produce, yogurt, cheese, eggs and frozen meat, as well as non-perishable foods, personal care and household items in the food hamper,” Pamela McLean, Executive Director of the Okotoks Food Bank explains. “Without generous donations such as the one we receive from Fuel Good Day we would be unable to provide these essentials and fresh food options for our clients."
Christmas is coming and that means it’s time to start getting gifts.
While we have all seen significant changes during the COVID-19 pandemic, many community organizations have faced substantial challenges and dealt with massive organizational change.
