Set a large, heavy skillet over medium-high heat. While you cook the bacon, rub the burger patties all over with barbecue rub or chili powder, and sprinkle with salt.

Transfer the bacon to a paper towel-lined plate, pour off any excess fat and cook the patties in the same pan for 8-10 minutes, or until just cooked through.
3.
Top with cheese and cover with a lid or piece of foil for another minute to allow the cheese to melt.
4.
Serve the patties on the buns, making them doubles if you like, and top with the bacon, lettuce and tomato (if you like), and your choice of condiments.
