Meet Your Co-op Board of Directors

There are three officers of the Board: Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary. Board appointment of officers, committees and representatives takes place each year following the Annual Meeting.

Patricia is an experienced corporate director, senior businesswoman, legal executive and privacy and compliance officer. She has held Vice-President and general counsel legal leadership and management roles, including in the energy, property development, mortgage brokerage, insurance and financial services industries. In addition to undergraduate business and law degrees from the University of Alberta, Patricia has an MBA from Queen’s University, and became a Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional in 2011. She was also appointed as Queen’s Counsel in Alberta in January 2014.She brings extensive experience in corporate governance, both supporting boards and being a part of boards, and significant experience with human resources issues, including recruitment, succession planning, talent development, compensation programming and pensions, and collective agreements, as well as CEO oversight, recruitment, and performance management. Outside of Calgary Co-op, she has sat on boards, including Alberta Innovates, Canadian North, Air Inuit, Beverage Container Management, Calgary Economic Development, Green Line, Real Estate Council of Alberta, Vibrant Communities Calgary, cSPACE Projects, YWCA of Calgary, and MINDD Inc. She hopes that her participation on the Calgary Co-op Board supports the strategic direction and sustainability of Co-op and builds the trust of member-owners in the governance and oversight of the organization. When it comes to her favourite local and Cal & Gary’s products, she’s a fan of Paradise Hills tomatoes and Cal & Gary’s chocolate covered almonds!

Mike holds CPA, SCMP and ICD.D designations as well as an Executive MBA. As the Vice-president of Finance and the Chief Financial Officer for the Alberta Energy Regulator, he is responsible for Financial Management, Supply Chain and Real-Estate. Mike also has extensive industry experience in business and finance at ATCO, Raytheon Canada, Canadian Natural Resources and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Mike also served 24 years with the Canadian Armed Forces. Mike boasts more than 5 years of experience in the retail industry, bringing skills in strategy, financial oversight, and supply chain management. In addition to the Calgary Co-op Board, Mike is also the Audit Committee Chair for the Mental Health Commission of Canada, a non-profit organization that develops and offers mental health resources, tools and training programs across Canada. In 2020, he also completed a four-year term as a Citizen Member of the Audit Committee for the City of Calgary. As the Vice-President of the Calgary Co-op Board, he hopes to contribute strategic and financial oversight, while advancing the conversation around relevance and sustainability of our Co-operative for future generations. Elaine has over 30 years of food, petroleum and liquor industry experience and knowledge in operations, human resource management, leadership, strategic planning, budgeting, marketing, customer service and environmental compliance with Calgary Co-op. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in psychology with a minor in business. She has served on all of the board’s committees; Audit, Governance, Nominations, Human Resources (Chair) and the Co-operative Relations Committee (Chair), as well as being the secretary. Elaine has served on the board of Federated Co-operatives (FCL), and the board of Granary Road, as well as sitting on various community and minor sports boards. She is active in the community, having volunteered for the Municipal Infrastructure Committee for the City of Calgary, and currently volunteers for the Calgary Police Service, Hockey Calgary, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and other community groups. During Elaine’s 30-year career with Calgary Co-op, she became passionate about the co-operative business model. With the hands-on experience she gained working in virtually every department of Calgary Co-op, she possesses a complete understanding of how Co-op operates. She is very receptive to feedback and willing to listen to our members and team member to provide valuable input to the board. Elaine enjoys many of the local products that Calgary Co-op has to offer, but especially appreciates all the Cal & Gary products. Her absolute favourite? Cal & Gary’s Crowchild Trail Mix!

With a Bachelor of Commerce degree, and an ICD.D designation, Cindy boasts a 30-year career working for Canadian companies, spanning industries including oil and gas, power utility, high voltage power, and engineering and construction. She is an accomplished former President and executive, travelling, acquiring, and managing international operations. Cindy also brings experience in executive management, leadership, strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions, financial acumen and analysis, operations, HR, and legal to the Calgary Co-op Board. Outside of Calgary Co-op, Cindy has held roles of Board Chair, Board Vice Chair and Committee Chair for the likes of the Canadian Dupuytren Society, CKUA Radio, Chinook Infrastructures and SNC-Lavalin ATP Inc. Her board experience includes for-profit, joint venture, co-operative, and not-for-profit organizations in the engineering and construction, retail, medical, and media industries. She has proudly helped fundraise for various organizations, hosted community and music events, volunteered for 15 years with the Connaught Gardens Association, and enjoys participating in events such as the annual MS Walk. As a Calgary Co-op board member, Cindy looks to provide oversight and guidance to the leadership to enrich the Calgary Co-op member community, bring value to the co-operative, and ensure sustainability. As for Cindy’s favourite local product? “I love a thick slice of a Paradise Hills tomato as a perfect topping on my burger and nibbling on Cal & Gary’s Macleod Trail Mix!”

Victoria is a Certified Management Consultant, and a fluently bilingual CPA, CA with over 30-years experience with PricewaterhouseCoopers and in industry. She is also a Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) and Business Finance Professional (BFP) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England & Wales (ICAEW) and a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD), the International Institute of International Auditors (IIIA) and the Calgary Chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE). She graduated from McGill University with a first-class honours degree in English Literature. As a CPA and CMC, she brings financial, audit, risk management, consulting skills and business acumen. Having served on a multitude of boards and committees, she also brings a wealth of experience in governance – she was appointed by the Governor in Council to Canada Lands Company Ltd, (CLCL) and serves as Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee. She also serves as the Chair of the Risk Committee of Connect First Credit Union, Vice-Chair of Platform Calgary, Chair of the British & Commonwealth Business Association of Canada, Board Director on the boards of Calgary Housing Company and Keyworks and has recently been appointed to the Departmental Audit Committee of Natural Resources Canada. She hopes to provide thoughtful analysis, lateral thinking and a unique perspective to the board, with respectful and collaborative dialogue with the other board members and management. Victoria is passionate about Calgary Co-op, all that it represents and the wonderful communities that it serves. Her favourite local product? “I love so many, it’s hard to pick only one!  But I think my favourite must be the local lamb as it’s delicious, tender and so hard to find locally other than at Calgary Co-op.”

Gael’s career started in banking and investment management, before she made the move to Government, first with Treasury and then with Consumer Affairs. She spent the balance of her career as the senior staff person of a philanthropic foundation. Gael now provides consulting services primarily to mission-driven organizations. Gael has a Bachelor of Commerce, an MBA, and a myriad of continuing education certifications, including an ICD.D designation. She offers extensive governance experience with crown boards, non-profits, and cooperatives across charities, start-ups and regulatory organizations. Gael continues to improve her skills and awareness by taking courses such as Indigenous Canada through the University of Alberta, and the Executive Bootcamp from the Canadian Institute for Diversity and Inclusion. She has served on many boards, including the Alberta Liquor and Gaming Commission, Connect First Credit Union, Calgary Public Library, Vibrant Communities Calgary, Miistakis Institute for the Rockies, and several non-profit housing agencies. She currently serves on the Board of WINS (Women In Need Society) and is a panel member for the Calgary Sub-division and Development Appeal Board (SDAB). On the Calgary Co-op board, she is particularly interested in measuring Coop’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) outcomes. When it comes to her favourite local product, Gael enjoys Noto Gelato. “Black Cherry is my favourite flavour!”

With a background in financial services, Dominique is a graduate of McGill university, a CPA, CA member of CPA Alberta and received her ICD.D designation in early 2021. Fully bilingual in French and English, Dominique brings over 30 years of experience to Calgary Co-op. Formerly a CFO at Alberta Blue Cross and CEO at Western Life Assurance Company, Dominique started her career at KPMG, including three years in their Paris office, focusing on mergers and acquisitions. As a seasoned executive and former CFO, Dominique brings financial acumen, risk management, strategic planning and execution, change management, human resources, leadership and governance experience to the board. She recently completed her term on the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta where she chaired the Audit Committee and served on the HR committee. Dominique has also been a Board member for many non-profit organizations, including the Westside Recreation Centre in Calgary. She believes her experience will help guide the Co-op management team and execute the strategic plan, as she has been involved with boards for the past 25 years, either as management or as a board member and brings experience in maintaining and improving governance. With a career spanning more than 35 years, Evan holds a Bachelor and Masters of Engineering from the University of Alberta, an Honorary Bachelor of Business Administration from Mount Royal University and a Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching from Royal Roads University. He started his career as a mechanical engineer in Oil and Gas, became a serial tech start-up founder and executive, a PricewaterhouseCoopers global practice partner, adjunct professional in entrepreneurship at the Bisset School of Business and an Executive Coach. He recently returned to the start-up world as the Co-Founder of AltoSante Venture Studio. Evan has experience creating, growing and leading successful advanced supply chain technology, e-commerce and artificial intelligence companies. In addition to the Co-op board, Evan is active in the Calgary innovation community as a Founding Partner at the University of Calgary Creative Destruction Lab and is a volunteer General Partner of the CMRIC venture capital fund. He has sat on a number of boards over the years and has been involved locally as a minor hockey and football coach for over 30 years. Evan looks forward to contributing most to the Governance, Nominations and Human Resources committees, with executive and board experience in strategy, mergers and acquisitions, finance, corporate culture, human capital management, product development and operational management. Evan’s favourite local products? The local craft brewer collaboration beers. “They go especially well with Cal & Gary’s kettle chips and nuts.”

With an MBA from Royal Roads University, a Bachelor of Arts in Urban and Regional Studies from the University of Lethbridge and an ICD.D designation, Brad has an extensive career, including roles in the real estate, hospitality, energy, utilities, conventions and tourism, not-for-profit, crown and government agencies, and reciprocal insurance industries in small, medium, and large-scale enterprises in Canada and the U.S. He holds experience in profit and loss accountability, strategic planning and strategy execution and oversees a number of major projects. His strength lies in strategy and innovation leadership, with an ability to create value and enhance operational excellence. In addition to Calgary Co-op, Brad currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Victoria Park Business Improvement Area, cSPACE Projects, the Real Estate Insurance Exchange, the Canadian Urban Institute and the Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council. He prides himself in helping organizations enhance their impact in the community and the sphere of business they operate in. He wants to continue to enhance Calgary Co-op’s impact on the community, help guide the strategy of the organization and influence improvements in the various lines of business it operates, making sure Co-op continues to run a thriving co-operative. Brad’s favourite local product? Only Alberta Meats! “I grew up on a farm in southern Alberta, so I’m partial to locally sourced meat products.”

Director Election

Calgary Co-op (Calgary Co-operative Association Limited) is a local co-operative owned by its Member-owners. The share you purchase when you join Calgary Co-op allows you to participate in the “one member-one vote” democratic process which means you have the ability to nominate an eligible Member-owner as a candidate for the Board, vote in Director Election and actively participate in meetings of Member-owners.
