Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3-4 slices fresh ginger
  • 1 litre Five Alive
  • 1 bottle red wine
  • 1-2 sprigs fresh rosemary
  • 3 - 4 orange and/or apple (slices)
  • 1 tbsp mulling spices
  • a few whole star anise or cinnamon sticks

How to Make It

In a small saucepan, bring the sugar, water and ginger to a simmer; remove from heat and set aside to cool.

Pour through a sieve into a jar and store in the fridge.

To make the sangria, pour the Five Alive and red wine into a large pitcher.

Add a few sprigs of rosemary, some orange and/or apple slices.

Put the mulling spices into a tea ball or square of cheesecloth (bundled and tied with kitchen string) and add it along with a couple cinnamon sticks and/or star anise and a couple spoonfuls of ginger syrup.

Stir and let sit for an hour before serving. (Add more ginger syrup if you like it gingery, or think it needs it.)
