Classic Cheeseburger

It’s no surprise the burger is king of the fast food world—the ingredients are simple to assemble, they cook quickly and are easy to eat out of hand. A homemade burger can come together in about ten minutes with a minimal mess to clean up afterward.

Classic Cheeseburger

Total Time:

Skill Level:

  • lbs. ground chuck or lean ground beef
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 6 cheese slices
  • 6 burger buns
  • condiments of your choice (sliced tomato, onion, torn lettuce, sliced avocado, pickles, cooked bacon, ketchup, mustard, mayo)

How to Make It

Take your ground beef out of the package and gently shape it into patties, making them evenly thick and slightly concave in the middle. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

If you’re grilling, preheat your barbecue to medium-high. Otherwise, set a large, heavy skillet over medium-high heat and get it nice and hot. (Add a drizzle of vegetable oil, if you like.)

Place the burgers on the grill or skillet, close the lid or cover loosely with a piece of foil, and cook for about 5 minutes. Flip and cook in the same manner for another 5 minutes. (Don’t press down on them, or you’ll squeeze the juices out.) You’ll know they’re done when the juices run clear and the internal temperature reads 160˚F (71˚C).

Turn the heat off, leaving the burgers on the grill or skillet, and place a piece of cheese on top of each. Close the lid or cover for a few minutes, until the cheese melts.

Serve your burgers on soft buns with whatever toppings you like, with a tossed green salad and mango sorbet for dessert.

Contrary to popular belief, a hamburger doesn’t require fillers and binders, like eggs, breadcrumbs and seasonings—start with great quality beef and all you need to do is gently shape the meat into a patty and sprinkle it with salt and pepper before sliding it into the pan or onto the grill. All it takes is 4-5 minutes per side and you have juicy burgers for a fraction of the price of takeout. Serve them with oven fries or a simple tossed salad to round out your meal along with mango sorbet for dessert.
