Calgary Co-op Food Stores to Remove Plastic Shopping Bags in January 2020

October 17, 2019 Calgary, Alberta –With increasing concerns about the amount of plastic used in retail and feedback from our members, Calgary Co-operative Association Limited (“Calgary Co-op)” is taking continued action to reduce the number of plastic shopping bags we sell.

Effective January 1, 2020 we will be removing plastic shopping bags from all of our Calgary Co-op Food Stores. Previously this year we removed all plastic shopping bags at our Wine Spirits Beer and Gas Station locations.

“We have seen a steady decrease in the number of plastic bags we sell following the introduction of our compostable shopping bag last spring,” says Ken Keelor, CEO, Calgary Co-op. “Our members are sending a clear message about their use of plastic and their desire to see it reduced at our stores.”

To ensure our members have options for their purchases when shopping at any of our locations, we have three ways for them to carry out their items.

  • We will continue to offer our 100% compostable shopping bag that our members can purchase for 10₵.
  • Members can bring their reusable shopping bags. For each reusable bag used, we will donate 3₵ to Calgary Co-op’s Community Foundation on the members’ behalf.
  • Members can take their purchases with them in hand without a bag.

Using non-plastic shopping bags is one of the most impactful changes Calgary Co-op and our members can make to reduce plastic usage associated with shopping. With this change we remain committed to further reduce the use of plastic in our stores by working with our partners and suppliers to research new packaging options for our products.
