Mural depicting deep musical roots of community unveiled at Killarney Co-op gas station

 Killarney mural

Calgary, Alberta (July 19, 2018) – Calgary Co-op is excited to announce the unveiling of Calgary’s newest public art, a mural created by local artists Chris Pecora and Cam Hoff of Slugger Studio. Located on the west facing side of the soon-to-open Killarney Co-op gas station, the mural took 100 hours and a 10 person crew to complete.

“The mural is a depiction of a neighbourhood band, where all the musicians flow together lyrically in a visual representation of diversity and harmony,” said Chris Pecora, Slugger Studio. “Tree imagery is used throughout, referencing Killarney's beautiful canopy, which is a source of community pride. The green areas are gathering places, bringing people together for outdoor festivals and children's activities.”

Through a clean, colourful, and playful graphic design, the artists’ hope the mural provides joy and positive energy to the visual landscape, while celebrating Killarney's vibrant community members and history.

“Teaming up with Slugger Studio to bring to life a piece of public art that resonates with our members was an important part of the development strategy for this new location,” said Woody Stelnicki, Managing Director, Petroleum, Calgary Co-op. “Killarney is a tightknit community that prides itself on the musical creativity of its residents – in fact, within a few blocks you'll find a recording studio, an instrument shop, a music school, and a record store.”

The new Co-op gas station, located on the corner of 17 Avenue and 28 Street and is scheduled to open in late July. The new development will feature a 1,245 sq. ft. convenience store and eight pumps with diesel.
