Calgary Co-op enters energy efficiency game with the installation of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system

Friday, August 25 (Calgary, Alberta) – Calgary Co-op is excited to announce our shift towards renewable energy with the installation of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems at select food centre locations throughout the Calgary area.

With six additional CHP systems set to be installed in select food centres over the next year, the Shawnessy Calgary Co-op location is the first fully dedicated CHP system to be installed into a grocery store in Western Canada.

“Calgary Co-op is committed to providing our members with exceptional customer experiences and services that sustain and grow our business and communities,” said Tony Argento, Director, Real Estate and Development. “The installation of the CHP systems provide renewable energy to our food centres and is just one of the many ways Calgary Co-op is listening to our environmentally-minded members.”

Using cogeneration technology, the CHP systems is an efficient and environmentally conscious approach to generating power using waste heat produced by natural gas to boil water that is used to heat/cool a building.

The current system installed at the Shawnessy food centre has been operational for five months, with tremendous reductions to the overhead utility costs by 30 per cent, reduced energy waste to 90 per cent in efficiency, and significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Due to the CHP system running parallel to the central grid, a component can be added at a later date that can provide the system with the capability of generating enough power to continue to run the food centres during city-wide power outages.
