What are the special attributes and experience that make you a strong candidate for Calgary Co-op’s board?

I possess over 30 years food, petroleum and liquor industry experience and knowledge in human resource management, leadership, strategic planning, budgeting, marketing and customer service. I have experience with other boards; Granary Road and Federated Cooperatives Limited, and have served on ALL Calgary Co-op Board Committees: Audit, Governance, Nominations, Human Resource (Chair), Co-op Relations (Chair). This coupled with my previous Co-op Board experience is in full alignment with the needs identified by the board through their gap analysis. I am proud of Calgary Co-op and strive to uphold its traditions and the great value it offers to our member owners so that we can continue to grow and prosper.

Why do you want to serve on the Calgary Co-op Board of Directors?

During my 30 year career with Calgary Co-op I became passionate about the co-operative business model. With the hands on experience I gained working in virtually every department of our Co-op, I possess a complete understanding of how our Co-op operates. I am very receptive to feedback and willing to listen to our members and employees in order to provide valuable input to the board.

I am a Chartered Professional Accountant with over twenty-five years experience and understand the financial aspects of Calgary Co-op and the issues it is facing. As a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors and having served on many boards, I also understand good governance and have the skills necessary to ensure the interests of the membership and the organization are always prioritized. My many years of real estate experience will assist the Board develop its long-term strategic vision and maximize the value of its largest assets.

What are the special attributes and experience that make you a strong candidate for Calgary Co-op’s board?

Constituents chose me to represent them in 10 elections to Calgary City Council and the Alberta Legislature. I’ve learned that creative, common ground solutions can be found to difficult problems and entrenched positions. The key is always to listen intently, engage widely and act respectfully. I’ve had the privilege to lead award winning multi-stakeholder teams tackling issues such as urban re-development, homelessness, and ethno-cultural diversity. From a business perspective, ENMAX enterprise value grew $2 Billion and became a renewable energy leader while I was a director. I’ve chaired the City’s Audit and Finance Committees and served on the board of The Trico Group, Calgary Convention Centre Authority, Calgary Zoo, Calgary Homeless Foundation and Climate Change Central.

Why do you want to serve on the Calgary Co-op Board of Directors?

I want to strengthen our family of cooperatives. Life is better when we cooperate. Buying locally helps keep Calgary resilient. Owner-member profit sharing helps make life more affordable. Let’s engage our owner-members more extensively and effectively. It will differentiate us in the market. Let’s be 21st century “green grocer” — reducing food waste, single use plastic use, and leading in energy efficiency and renewable energy.

What are the special attributes and experience that make you a strong candidate for Calgary Co-op’s board?

I am a seasoned real estate executive with decades of experience, at the vice-presidential level with major financial institutions, managing property assets and acquisitions with valuations of up to $100 million and reporting directly to CEOs and boards of directors. Additionally, I have served on numerous boards of directors, including the Calgary Cooperative Association Ltd. where I was also chair. One of the boards I served on was that of a special interest group where we promoted.

Why do you want to serve on the Calgary Co-op Board of Directors?

Calgary Co-op has announced significant real estate investments of $2.5 billion, entered into a supply chain contract with Save-on Foods, worth in excess of one billion dollars, to supply groceries and merchandise, and entered the cannabis distribution market. Such activities require the expertise of a seasoned financial and property investment executive. I would like to provide that direction as well as preserving the cooperative model.

Why do you want to serve on the Calgary Co-op Board of Directors?

The Co-op is uniquely rooted in Calgary. It stands apart from traditional retail as every member has a consumer voice. I want to serve an organization that profits Calgarians by engaging new demographics, loyal members, local partnerships and rewarding innovative staff.
