ACCOMMODATION

Our preferred suppliers offer 4-star-plus properties such as Las Brisas Huatulco, which features three private beaches. I would also recommend the Gala Beach Resort Huatulco, just across the bay. If you're looking for accommodation that's a little less expensive, you might consider Barcelo Huatulco Beach Resort (4 star). Budget-minded travellers who want to be near the marina could try Castillo Huatulco (2 star plus). There is much more information about these and other properties in the brochures available in our travel offices.

DINING

Although most of the properties are all-inclusive and offer several different dining options - both buffet and a la carte -- you may want to experience the many local restaurants available in the area.

GETTING THERE

Huatulco is not as accessible as other coastal areas in Mexico; perhaps one of the reasons why it is as yet less visited than other destinations. You can get there by plane from Canada on direct non-stop flights with WestJet and Skyservice. Flight time from Calgary is about 6 hours.

GETTING AROUND

From the airport - The airport is quite close to Huatulco on the northwest side, and a private taxi will cost between $10 and $20, depending on hotel location. If you've booked a holiday package, airport transfers are usually included.

Taxis - It's a bit too far to walk between the three main towns (Crucecita, Santa Cruz and Tangolunda), but taxis are plentiful and very reasonably priced. The average taxi fare from town to town is about $4.

Bus - Local mini buses run between the three towns. If you aren't carrying a lot of packages or luggage, and you're not in a hurry, they're a terrific value - a fraction of the cost of a taxi.

TRAVEL TIPS

  • Banks with ATM machines are just around the corner from the main square (south side) in the town of Crucecita. During business hours, banks and the Casas de Cambio will also cash traveller's cheques and exchange currency.
  • We recommend that all visitors to Mexico have adequate medical insurance and/or travel assistance coverage.
  • Internet cafes are commonplace in Mexico, especially downtown and in the main tourist areas.
