Accomodation

There is sure to be at least one resort that will suit your individual tastes and needs. If you're seeking a quiet boutique resort surrounded by a vibrant little town, Sosua by the Sea is ideal. Or perhaps the convenience of having activities within the Playa Dorada complex will entice you to stay in a resort within the grounds, such as the Viva Wyndham Playa Dorada. Possibly a resort that has everything within the property, like the Bahia Principe San Juan, is more of what you are looking for? Whether you are yearning to be surrounded by it all or want to get away from it all, the Dominican Republic has something just right for you.

Getting Around

There are plenty of taxis to take you wherever you'd like to go. With clearly displayed rates, either one-way or round-trip, it's easy to arrange transportation between your resort and your day's destination. Car, moped, and scooter rentals are everywhere, though I'd highly recommend leaving the driving to the locals.

Getting There

Air Transat, SkyService, and Air Canada offer weekly direct flights from Calgary. Flights and transfers can be combined with accommodation using Transat Holidays, Signature Vacations, Air Canada Vacations, Nolitours, Sunquest, or Conquest Vacations. Fun Sun Vacations and Holiday House can also arrange accommodation.

Travel Tips

  • Puerto Plata is 2 hours ahead of Calgary (3 hours ahead during Daylight Savings Time.)
  • Avoid consuming the water, even when brushing your teeth.
  • Navigating the roads in a rental car or scooter is not recommended. You are on vacation; stay safe and let the locals take you around.
  • ATM machines are available, though not always operational. Save yourself the inconvenience and bring enough money to enjoy your vacation comfortably.
  • Both Canadian and US dollars are readily exchangeable for Dominican pesos, though the exchange rates commonly favour the US dollar. Many stores and services accept both US dollars and Dominican pesos.
  • A departure tax of $20 US is payable at the departure gates prior to your return home.
  • Couples considering a wedding in Puerto Plata would be wise to set a date and request a booking as early as possible, even before selecting a resort. There is only one judge serving the entire northern coast and dates fill up fast.
  • Things to shop for in the Dominican include amber jewellery, larimar jewellery (larimar is the national stone), local paintings, cigars, rum, coffee, and pure vanilla.
