Benefits of Calgary Co-op Membership

Everyone is welcome to shop at Calgary Co-op. But when you’re a member, you enjoy exclusive advantages. And the perks just keep getting better. Your $1, one-time investment makes you a member-owner and buys a lifetime of benefits, including:

Free Value Plus card and key tag.

Your Value Plus card and key tag will unlock the benefits of membership, including grocery savings and Revved Up Rewards on your petroleum purchases. Always carry your card or key tag and use it every time you shop.

Instant member-only savings from Value Plus partners.

We’ve teamed up with top retailers in Calgary and surrounding areas to bring you specials on everything from haircuts to new wheels. All you have to do is show your Value Plus card. For details, ask us for a copy of the Value Plus Partners brochure.

Check out our Value Plus Partners program for member-only savings around the city.

Revved Up Rewards at our gas bars.

You earn grocery coupons worth 3¢/litre every time you fuel up and present your Value Plus card. Each fill also contributes to your annual petroleum return. In 2007, this added a further 10.5¢/litre in savings (based on an average fuel price with a 12.6% allocation rate.)

Annual patronage returns.

T4As have been mailed to members who received a patronage return cheque and statement in February 2007,  based on purchases you made in the 2006 financial year. For the 2007 financial year, members will share $52 million in patronage returns and share equity (compared to $33 million in 2006). Cheques and patronage return statements based on the 2007 financial year and your purchases during 2007 will be mailed to members in late February 2008.

How does the patronage return work? Annual patronage returns are unique to co-operatives, which share a portion of their profits with their member-owners. The annual patronage return you receive from Calgary Co-op is based on your annual purchases at Calgary Co-op . The more you shop and fuel up with us, the greater your annual patronage return. Virtually every purchase counts, including groceries, gas, liquor, prescription drugs, and travel.

Understanding the T4A: Calgary Co-op is required by the federal government to report all patronage returns paid in excess of $100.00 and to withhold 15% of the amount earned over $100.00 and remit it to the government. The T4A reflects the patronage return payment made to you in the previous year. Patronage returns are not necessarily taxable. Patronage returns earned on consumer goods (i.e. groceries, household items, gasoline for private car use) are not subject to tax. You are entitled to claim the tax withheld as outlined on your T4A as a credit when you file your personal income tax (write on the face of your T4A "Consumer Goods Only"). Instructions for including this on your personal income tax form are provided on the back of your T4A under Recipient. (Patronage returns are normally only taxable for business persons, farmers, contractors, etc. For all others, see the above.)

If you have any questions regarding your patronage return or statement, please email us using this website, or call our Membership Department at 219-6025 and select option 2. Thank you.
