Caring for the Environment

Calgary Co-op believes in contributing to the communities it serves, which means working hard to ensure that we actively support programs and services that protect our environment and conserve energy. Our commitment to the environment includes onsite recycling programs for members of the community, in-store recycling programs, energy management initiatives, and petroleum safeguards. Using Energy Wisely

In 2003, Calgary Co-op began an extensive energy management project at all of our locations by installing energy efficient equipment, coolers and lights. Work continues today with implementing an awareness program with our employees to ensure lights are turned off, cooler doors are closed and other energy-savings initiatives are in place. The result is an estimated 20% reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Calgary Co-op, members who reuse their shopping bags while shopping in our food stores can receive a 3¢ credit per plastic bag, which they can apply to their grocery purchase or donate to charity.

Newspaper, plastic milk jug and other recycling bins are available at every Calgary Co-op shopping centre. The money collected from newspaper recycling is returned to the community through our donations program. We also recycle beverage cans, oil and antifreeze containers.
