Calgary Co-op to Hire Over 200 New Employees

August 27, 2004, Calgary, Alberta - As the result of continuing growth and expansion, including two new food centres slated to open this fall, Calgary Co-op is currently recruiting for over 200 new employees.

These positions include both full and part-time positions, including service clerks, cashiers, gas bar attendants, as well as a variety of positions in our food and pharmacy departments.

"This is good news for Calgary Co-op and for the Calgary community and local economy," says Donna Burn, director of member and public relations for Calgary Co-op. "This is the first time in Calgary Co-op's history that we have opened two new centres in the same year, and we are excited about the opportunities this presents for us to grow and compete in the Calgary marketplace."

Calgary Co-op began recruiting for its new Midtown Market and Rocky Ridge centres this past spring and is close to filling the positions for those two locations with both current employees wanting to transfer to the new locations and new employees. Most of the additional 200 positions still needed are to fill vacancies at other Calgary Co-op centres as a result of employees transferring to the two new centres.

People interested in applying for a position at Calgary Co-op can obtain an application form at any Calgary Co-op customer service office or gas bar.

The new Midtown Market will open in late September, while Rocky Ridge will open in mid-October.

Locally owned and operated, Calgary Co-op is one of the largest retail co-operatives in North America with assets of $272 million, sales of $750 million, 390,000 members and 3,600 employees. In addition to its head office in Calgary, Alberta, and the two new centres slated to open in the fall of 2004, Calgary Co-op will operate 20 retail shopping centres, 23 gas bars, 12 liquor stores and 12 travel agencies in Calgary, Airdrie and Strathmore, Alberta.
